03-Jan-2012

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has assured that there is sufficient medicine for patients at Hospital Kuala Lumpur despite the theft of drugs, including cough syrup, antibiotics and fever tablets worth RM1mil.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said police and internal investigations were ongoing.

“This is the first time that such a major theft had happened at the hospital.

“We will sack and file criminal charges against the staff mem- bers involved,” he said here yesterday.

To avoid detection, two male staff members had pilfered from the pharmacy of the neurology department.

However, a stock count by another hospital worker on Dec 28 detected the missing drugs. A police report was lodged the next day.

Police subsequently arrested a pharmacist and his accomplice after RM1.07mil worth of medicines were found missing from the hos-pital.
